Crochet Pattern for Waffle Pillow

This waffle pillow is not only incredibly soft and easy to make but also irresistibly adorable, making it a perfect addition to your home decor. Its charming design adds a delightful touch of cuteness to any room.

The pattern utilizes the waffle stitch, which I particularly love for its distinct, textured appearance that mimics the look of a classic waffle. This stitch produces a thick, durable fabric ideal for crafting home decor items like pillows.

To create this pillow, you’ll need to be familiar with the front post double crochet (FPdc) stitch. If you’re new to crocheting, don’t worry—this pattern is beginner-friendly. However, I recommend practicing the FPdc stitch before diving into the project to ensure a smooth crafting experience.

Materials:

  • 2 Premier Parfait Chunky 131yds #6 Super Bulky in brown. I used the color Teddy Bear.
  • 1 Premier Parfait Chunky 131yds #6 Super Bulky in yellow. I used the color Sunshine.
  • Pink yarn for blush
  • Black yarn for the mouth
  • 7.5mm safety eyes
  • US size J 6.0 mm crochet hook
  • Poly-fil for stuffing
  • Stitch markers (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Size (approximate): 11″ tall and 12.5″ wide

Pattern Notes:

  • The Ch 2 at the beginning of rows does not count as a stitch.
  • The pattern has a chain multiple of 3 plus 2 stitches. If you want to adjust the size of your pillow, chain in multiples of 3 and add 2 stitches to that. For example, you can chain 12 and add 2 stitches for a total of 14.
  • This pattern uses the waffle stitch. If you have never done the waffle stitch, I recommend practicing with a small swatch first. I like to use acrylic yarn for my swatches because plush yarn doesn’t unravel easily when I make a mistake. You can chain 14 and follow the pattern to practice.
  • If you need a visual aid to learn the waffle stitch, search YouTube for tutorials. Some patterns vary on where you place your first stitch, but the concept is the same.
  • You can use your choice of yarn and hook size. Just keep in mind that this will change the final size of your plushie.
  • If you have trouble identifying the first or last stitch of the row, use stitch markers to help you keep track.

Abbreviations (US):

  • ch – chain
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • FPdc – front post double crochet

Make the Waffle Panels Using Brown Yarn (Make 2 Panels)
To begin ch 35

  • Row 1: Dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each chain. Ch 2 and turn. (33 sts)
  • Row 2: Dc in 1st st, FPdc in next st, *Dc in next 2 sts, FPdc in next st*. Repeat from * to *. When you reach the last 2 sts, FPdc in 2nd to last stitch, and dc in last st. Chain 2 and turn.
  • Row 3: Dc in 1st 2 sts, FPdc in next 2 sts. *Dc in next st, FPdc in next 2 sts*. Repeat from * to *. Dc in last st. Chain 2 and turn.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 alternately until you reach a total of 18 rows. Then, fasten off and weave in the ends.

Make the Butter

Start by chaining 8.

Row 1: Single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each remaining chain. Chain 1 and turn. (7 sts)

Rows 2-7: Single crochet in each stitch, chain 1, and turn.

  • After finishing the final row, slip stitch around the entire piece of butter. Add 2 slip stitches in each corner to help round them out. Leave a tail for sewing.
  • Now, add the eyes, mouth, and blush to your butter. Position the eyes between rows 6 and 7, with the eyes spaced 4 stitches apart.

Assemble the Waffle

  • Attach your butter to one of the waffle panels, making sure to sew it onto the right (correct) side of the panel.
  • Position your two waffle panels with the wrong sides facing each other.
  • Attach your yarn to the top left corner of both panels and make 2 single crochet stitches in the corner.
  • Continue single crocheting the panels together, placing 1 single crochet stitch in each stitch. At each corner, add 2 single crochet stitches to help round out the corners.
  • It can be challenging to see your stitches when crocheting the sides together. Just do your best; the stitch count is not crucial.
  • Before closing the final row with single crochet, stuff your waffle. Make sure not to overstuff it so that it maintains its shape.
